In Tuesday night’s republican debate, many of the candidates had strong performances, including Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Carly Fiorina.
Jeb and Trump went punch for punch calling each other out. In most debates, Trump has won their arguments, but I felt this debate was different. Jeb Bush called out trump, saying, “Trump is great at the one liners… You will never be able to insult your way to the presidency.” Jeb definitely won this match with Trump and had his best debate thus far. Trump made himself look childish and immature, but still did have a strong debate overall.
Rubio and Cruz also went head to head last night, where in my opinion Cruz came out on top. Rubio seemed weak on immigration and appeared to speak from a defensive position, while Cruz was constantly on the offensive. However, Cruz went too far. He spoke for too long and spoke over the moderator twice. This hurt Cruz a bit, but later talks came up regarding Trump and Cruz teaming up as running mates. If this were to happen, they could form a great team and capture a large population of voters, but who knows if that could ever.
Then, on the outside, I loved watching Fiorina and Paul. Neither of these two have a great chance of winning, in my opinion, but Rand Paul is like an oracle for the viewers and Fiorina is far better than she gets credit for.
Whenever a candidate seemed to give misleading information to boost their image or appearance to the viewers, Paul speaks up. For example, Chris Christie said he wanted to shoot down Russian planes that enter no fly zones because we can’t keep letting Russia walk all over us without repercussions. The crowd loved it, and I’m sure many of you do too. But, Rand Paul interjected to let the people know how bad an idea this was. He stated that you can’t just set up a no-fly zone in another country where Russia already flies and start shooting down their planes. That is a recipe for World War III. Like I said, he won’t win or even go far but I think he’s an important voice to listen to during debates. Sometimes candidates try to feed into this generations patriotism and Paul serves as a good check to our emotions.
As for Carly, she is my darkhorse pick. She doesn’t speak often, but when she does, it seems as if she’s always right. She has good ideas on how to work with the private sector on national security, and a strong voice on national defense. In my opinion, she’s a great balance of strength and wisdom. I urge you to listen to her going forward if you haven’t already. I don’t think she has a strong chance of winning, however I think that she would be a great fit in somebody’s cabinet.
