Most people just know him as that savage you wish you had as a grandpa. But as of now, the NCAA now knows him as “Mr. 700.”
Coastal Carolina men’s Basketball Coach Cliff Ellis just recently won his 700th game as a Division I head coach. Not many people realize how great Coastal has it with Coach Ellis. They have the 19th most winning coach in NCAA DI history. He took the Chants to the big dance two years ago for the first time since 1993, and then he followed it up with another appearance last year.
Ellis’ name is forever going to be cemented in history with names like Jim Boeheim and Mike Krzyzewski. If you’re a CCU student, that has got to feel good. When I first heard this, I did get a little nervous. Is this it? Is he going to retire after this?
Hell no!! Ellis feels like there is still more story to be written for the Chants. And that is what makes it awesome. Ellis is a class act respected among his peers and loyal to his cause. With his highly respected coaching career and this latest milestone, Ellis could get a job at a higher end D1 school, but he chooses to stay here by the beach and continue to coach the Chants. He is looking to lead Coastal to a third consecutive Big South title before moving up to the Sun Belt Conference.
The next home game at the HTC Center is February 11. Coastal students and fans alike, I urge you to get your tickets early for this one. Pack out the stands and let this legend feel the love he has earned.
